It all started when…

The SPHS (Stony Plain Horticultural Society) first met in September of 1964 at the Stony Plain Community Centre. In those days the membership fee was only $1.  Meetings have been held at the Community Centre, Provincial Building, Memorial Composite High School and most recently at the St. Matthews Lutheran Church. Most meetings have had an educational component with a guest speaker or a tour to a horticultural facility. The SPHS has been involved in Bench Shows, Seedy Saturdays, Farmers Day parades, Garden tours, and gardening classes at the Stony Plain Library. Bench shows were held for over 43 years. These showcased flowers, vegetables and fruits and contestants were awarded cash prizes, trophies and ribbons. The judging and the standards for the bench shows were looked after by the Alberta Horticultural Association.

Stony Plain has a rich history in agricultural-related events. Our Society has always strived to give back to the community and has helped with gardens at the Pioneer Museum, Whispering Waters, Westview Hospital, Stony Plain Library and Saint Mathews Church. The social aspect is an important part of our club. In past years SPHS has hosted annual Christmas parties, summer picnics and strawberry teas. These events give our members a chance to share information and knowledge with others and get to know people in their communities. The purpose of SPHS has always been to promote horticulture of the highest quality possible amongst its members and in the community.
